Princeton Tops Women's Basketball, 73-55

PHILADELPHIA - Becky Brown scored 28 pointsand Princeton went on a late26-8 run as the Tigers downed Penn, 73-55, in Ivy League action Saturday night at the Palestra.

The Quakers (1-10, 0-1 Ivy)extended a 10-game losing skid while the Tigers (10-4, 1-0 Ivy) clinched their best start since the 1995-96 season.

The two rivals traded baskets for much of the first half and went into the locker rooms with the score tied at 25-25.

It was much of the same at the start of the second half, as Penn's Rachel Wilson scored all 10 of her points in the first 12 minutes. Wilson's jumper with 8:38 left gave her team a 45-42 lead.

Princeton then scored five straight points to go up two, until Joey Rhoads knocked down two free throws to knot the score at 47-47 with 6:36 left in the game.

The Tigers then started their run that would put the game out of reach, led by center Becky Brown and Jessica Berry, who scored 17 of Princeton's 26 points in the final six minutes of the game.

Joey Rhoads scored a team-high 19 points in the losing effort for Penn while Jennifer Fleischer had 11 rebounds, moving her ahead of former Quaker Diane DiBonaventuro for sixth place on the all-time rebounding list with 701 for her career.

Brown finished with a game-high 28 points while Katy O'Brien added 17 for Princeton.

The Quakers return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 10, to face non-conference foe Rider at The Palestra. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
