Q&A With NCAA Qualifier Brooks Martino

PHILADELPHIA -The University of Pennsylvania will have five wrestlers competing this weekend at the 2015 NCAA Championships in St. Louis, Mo. Before the national tournament, they sat down to answer a few questions.

The lone first-time qualifier for the Quakers this week, Brooks Martino earned an automatic bid to NCAAs with his sixth place finish at the EIWA Championships. He has battled his way back after missing all of 2014-14 with injury.

Q: How long have you been wrestling? What are some of your earliest memories of the sport or reasons you got into wrestling?
A:I started wrestling about 17 years ago when I was in kindergarten. I got into the sport because both of my older brothers wrestled and because I needed a sport to do during the winter. Some of my earliest memories of wrestling are tagging along to their practices and messing around on the side of the mat instead of doing the actual practice.

Q: Describe Your Wrestling Style.
A: I would describe my wrestling style as unorthodox because I am very flexible.

Q: What is your all-time favorite wrestling memory?
A: My favorite wrestling memory is winning states my junior and senior years of high school in my own high school’s gym surrounded by my friends and family.

Q: What do you like best about being a Penn Wrestler?
A: The thing I like most about being a Penn wrestler is that we are more than just athletes. There is a long list of Penn wrestling alumni that have shown that you can be extremely successful both on and off the mat.

Q: If you could wrestle one wrestler from the past, who would it be and why?
A: I would wrestle Abraham Lincoln because who wouldn’t want to say they wrestled a president.

Q: What is your favorite restaurant on campus? What is your go-to order?
A: My favorite place to eat on campus is Bui’s Food Truck. I keep it simple and always get a Bacon, Egg and Cheese with Bui sauce and don’t toast the bread.

Q: What has been your favorite class at Penn? Why?
A: I have enjoyed all of my science classes, but my favorite class at Penn so far has been Introduction to Clay. This class was a change of pace from my science classes and I loved being able to make pots, mugs, sculptures and other various ceramic pieces.

Q: Do you have any pre-match supoerstitions?
A: I don’t really have any pre-match superstitions. I usually just stay lose and think about executing what we work on in practice.

Q:What is your favorite TV Show?
A: Game of Thrones. I recommend reading the books as well.

Q: What are you looking to do when you graduate?
A: After I graduate from Penn I want to attend Medical School so that I can study to become an orthopedic surgeon and be able to stay involved with sports.

Q: Describe your fellow Penn Wrestling NCAA Qualifiers in one sentence.
Lorenzo - Don’t touch his stuff without asking him first.
C.J. - He will talk your ear off if you give him an intellectual topic and a minute of your time.
Canaan - He laughs like a psychopath.
Caleb - He is a fellow Virginian that always wears the same hat.
