PHILADELPHIA -The University of Pennsylvania will have five wrestlers competing this weekend at the 2015 NCAA Championships in St. Louis, Mo. Before the national tournament, they sat down to answer a few questions.
Lorenzo Thomas is the No. 10 seed at 184 pounds this week. Last year, he wrestled from the No. 11 seed to a sixth place finish. In the process, he became Penn's first-ever All-American at 184 pounds. A Pittsburgh, Pa. native, Thomas is a senior, but has one year of eligibility remaining for the Red and Blue.
Q: How long have you been wrestling? What are some of your earliest memories of the sport or reasons you got into wrestling?
A: I have been wrestling for 17 years. I starting wrestling because my dad told me it would help with football, and of course being 5 years old I wanted to play in the NFL. My earliest memories were losing. Lots of losing. I only won 2 matches in my first 3 years.
Q: Describe Your Wrestling Style.
A: Funky and unconventional.
Q: What is your all-time favorite wrestling memory?
A: I have two. My team being runner-up at states my senior yea,r and becoming an All-American last year.
Q: What do you like best about being a Penn Wrestler?
A: I like being a part of a close-knit, hard working team and also going to one of the most prestigious schools in the country.
Q: If you could wrestle one wrestler from the past, who would it be and why?
A: Probably Ben Askren. He is really funky, and I think it would be a really fun match.
Q: What is your favorite restaurant on campus? What is your go-to order?
A: I have to go with Sitar. All you can eat Indian food.
Q: What has been your favorite class at Penn? Why?
A: Astronomy 001- Survey of the Universe. I really enjoyed learning about space.
Q: Do you have any pre-match supoerstitions?
A: I used to have many, many superstitions. I have tried to eliminate all of them and just wrestle.
Q:What is your favorite TV Show?
A: My two favorites are Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones.
Q: What are you looking to do when you graduate?
A: I am not sure yet. I am considering going to law school.
Q: Describe your fellow Penn Wrestling NCAA Qualifiers in one sentence.
Caleb: Don't mess with him if he hasn't had his bullet proof coffee.
CJ: Modern day hippie.
Brooks: Biochemistry nerd.
Canaan: Too strong for his own good.
