Quakers Advance to Finals with 23-15 Win over Ohio State

Hampton, Va. – After demolishing the competition on the first day of the Virginia Duals, the Quakers ran into a tough Ohio State team in the semifinals on Saturday afternoon. However, Penn prevailed to win its fifth-straight match, defeating the Buckeyes, 23-15, and advance to the finals against Indiana tonight.

Senior Mike Silengo paced the Quakers for the third-straight match, winning his 125 bout, 11-4 over Nate Costello. Senior captain Matt Valenti earned a major decision over No. 20 Reece Humphrey, 11-4. The Buckeyes got on the scoreboard at 141 and 149 pounds with a decision and a fall. Penn’s Cesar Grajales fell to T. J. Enright, 3-1. The match was tied at 1, until the final seconds of the bout when Enright was awarded a takedown as time expired. Freshman Matt Dragon was pinned by No. 6 Jeff Jaggers in the second period. Despite the outcome, Dragon was hanging with Jaagers as the score was tied a five. Ohio State took the lead, 9-7, with the fall.

Penn would win its next five matches to secure the win. No. 19 Gene Zannetti started the Quaker streak, defeating Stephen Wolery, 5-0. Sophomore Lior Zamir earned an 11-5 win over No. 15 Stephen Sommers at 165 pounds and junior Matt Herrington added bonus points with a major over Matt Auguston, winning 15-6. The Quakers secure the victory with No. 15 Dustin Wiles win at 184 pounds and senior Paul Velekei’s victory at 197.

With the match in hand, the Quakers forfeited at heavyweight.

The Red and Blue take on No. 15 Indiana in tonight’s finals. The Hoosiers are 8-0 on the season and finished as the 2005 runner-up last season. Penn’s highest finish at the duals was seventh in 1995. The two teams battle at 8:30 p.m.
