BEAUMONT, Calif. - The University of Pennsylvania men's golf team sits tied for eighth place after one day at the Braveheart Classic, which is being hosted at the Oak Glen Golf Course by UC Riverside.
The Quakers shot a team score of 297 on the first day and are tied with Boise State. Loyola Marymount leads the team chase with 289, followed by UCLA and Jacksonville which are both two strokes back.
Play was suspended in the second round Monday due to darkness. The tournament will continue and conclude Tuesday.
Derek Rogers was Penn's top player after the first round. The senior shot even-par 72 to put him in a tie for 12th place with eight other golfers. Sean Barrett and Michael Blodgett are second among the Penn golfers; both shot 2-over-par 74. Dean Merrill and Nick Ryder round out the Quaker group; both shot 5-over-par 77.
Jacksonville's Jamie Kennedy currently leads the field; he shot an opening-round 68 to place one shot ahead of UCLA's Chris Heintz. Three golfers are tied at 70, while six shot 71 in the first round.
