UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. The University of Pennsylvania volleyball team dropped it first matchSaturday at the Penn State Classic, falling 3-0 to host andNo. 4-rankedPenn State. Game scores were 30-17, 30-16, 30-17.
The Nittany Lions (8-2) took early leads in the first two games and, despite a close contest in game three, managed to pull away lateto close out the match.
In game one, Penn (1-4) hung with the Nittany Lions early, but Penn State went ahead by five and extended it to 12 midway through the game thanks to Kaleena Walters who had three services aces.
It was the same story in game two -- Penn State scored five straight points to take a 13-5 lead and put the game out of reach.For the Quakers, Linda Zhang had eight assists.
Penn played the Nittany Lions close through the first half of game three, even holding a lead at9-5. However, that would be the extent of Penn’s lead, as Penn State staged it first comeback of the match. The Nittany Lionstied the score at 12-12, thenwent on a 7-0 run that put the game out of reach for the Red and Blue.
Cara Thomason had seven kills as Penn showed a balanced attack, with five different players landing between four and seven kills. Laura Black led the Quakers with three block assists.
The Red and Blue will look to avengeits two-match skid this afternoon, playingSeton Hall inits final match of the Penn State Classic.
