Quakers Go 2-1 in First Day of Multi-Meet

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The University of Pennsylvania women’s fencing team went 2-1 in day one of the Philadelphia Invitational Multi-Meet held at Hutchinson Gym. Penn defeated Temple (17-10) and Drew (19-8). Penn’s only loss came to Northwestern (17-10) who went undefeated on the day.

Penn was led by Holly Buechel who went 11-1 on the day in the epee. Fellow weapon-mate Kristen Hughes had an impressive showing going 10-2. In the sabre, Cassandra Frey and Cassandra Partyka both went 9-3.

Against Temple, Jackie Schramm, Abby Emerson and Buechel all went 3-0. Partyka, Schramm and Frey picked up two wins each against Drew in the sabre. The Quakers strongest showing came in the foil, where the Red and Blue swept Drew, 9-0. In Penn’s loss to Northwestern, Buechel picked up the Quakers three lone wins in the epee.

The Multi-Meet will resume on Sunday with action starting at 10 a.m. Tomorrow Penn will face Cornell, Drew, Duke, Haverford, North Carolina, Rutgers and Temple.
