Quakers Handle UMBC in Season Opener, 6-1

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The University of Pennsylvania men’s tennis team defeated UMBC 6-1 at Levy Pavilion on Wednesday in its season-opening match. The Quakers took all three doubles matches and five singles matches en route to victory.

Sophomore transfer Jason Pinsky and Joseph Lok got things started for the Red and Blue by defeating David Jackson and Ifran Shamasdin, 8-1. Brandon O'Gara and freshman Justin Fox took down James Tyler and Nick Salvage-Pollock, 8-6, before freshman Jonathan Boym and John Stetson closed out doubles by beating Lief Hollowell and Fernando Ferreira, 8-2.

In singles action, all of the five matches that Penn were done soin straight sets. Pinksy, who played in the No. 1 spot, defeated Tyler 6-2, 6-0. Boym beat Jackson 7-5, 6-0. Lok, Jimmy Fairbanks and Fox all won their matches to outlast the Retrievers.

The Quakers will only have a one day layoff until their next match. The Red and Blue travel to Tallahassee, Fla. to take on No.22 Florida State on Friday, Feb. 3 at noon. On Saturday, Penn plays Furman and No. 75 Nebraska.
