PHILADELPHIA – The women’s tennis team cruised to victory today, over their first nationally ranked opponent of the year, No. 59 Marshall. With the win, Penn improved to 3-0 on the season.
The victory started early for the No. 37 Quakers, as both No. 1 and 2 doubles squads won easily. Freshmen Maria Anismova and Ekaterina Kosminskaya beat the Herd’s Lynzee Keener and Kellie Schmitt in the No. 1 spot, 8-4, while juniors Yulia Rivelis and Julia Koulbitskaya won at the No. 2 spot, beating Jessica Keener and Yulia Kashelkina, 8-5. Penn sophomore Lenka Snajdrova and junior Charlotte Tansill lost in the No. 3 doubles spot to Thaddea Lock and Korlina Soor, 8-4.
In singles, several more wins came quickly for the Quakers. Anismova won her match in under half an hour, beating Jeanne Schwartz, 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 5 singles spot. Junior Michelle Mitchell also had a quick win in the No. 6 spot, as she beat Yulia Karshelkina, 6-3, 6-1.
In the No. 1 singles spot, Kosminskaya had her first loss of the year, 6-2, 6-3, to Schmitt, who is ranked No. 18 in the nation in singles, and has yet to lose a singles match this year. Strong performances in the No. 2 and 3 singles spots helped the Quakers seal the win. Rivelis won in the No. 2 spot, with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Soor, while Koulbitskaya won in the No. 3 spot, beating Kever 6-2, 6-1. Snajdrova had the only other loss for Penn, with a 6-3, 6-4 defeat from Lock in the No. 4 singles spot.
The Quakers don’t have much of a rest, as tomorrow they will host East Tennessee State at 1 p.m. in Levy Pavilion.
