Quakers Succesful in First Day of Penn Classic

PHILADELPHIA - The Quakers had a successful first day at the Penn Classic assix players were victorious in singles action and two Penn doubles teams moved into the round of eight.

Andy Magnes picked up the Quakers first win of the day defeating Mark Gober from Princeton. Magnes, the Red and Blue's only seeded player in the singles draw, took Gober in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. Jeremy Steglitz and Aubry Wand also won in straight sets. Steglitz beat Jordan Talbot of St. John's 6-3, 6-0, while Wand took John O'Rourke of Maryland 7-6(4), 6-1.

In Flight Asingles Jimmy Fairbanks won his match over Navy'sJason Hill 6-3,6-1.Justin Foxupset the seven seedJimmy Holland of St. Joseph's 1-6, 6-3, 6-3.Tas Tobais took down Chris Spencer from St. Joseph's 6-1, 7-6 (6). Joe Mirable lost his opening roundmatch 6-4, 6-3 to Jon Wanono of Rutgers.

After a first round bye Brandon O'Gara and Fox defeated Mark Gober and Chritstian Husby of Princeton 8-4.Tobais and Fairbanks werealso victorious in two matches.They beat Manhattan's Filip Szymik and Peter Czink 8-5 in their opening round match.In the second round they were victorious over PhilBayliss and Brian Costello of St. Joseph's 8-0.Mirable and Magnes fell to Columbia's Jared Drucker and DanUrban 8-2.

On Saturday Penn will be back in action at Levy Pavillion in day two of the Penn Classic.
