Quakers Take Early Flight to XC Championships

PHILADELPHIA – It was an early morning wake up for University of Pennsylvania cross country runners and coaches, as they departed from the university Thursday at 6:00 a.m. for the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. Hosted by Indiana State, sophomore Thomas Awad and freshman Cleo Whiting will represent Penn at championships and will compete at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course. The men’s 10K is slated for noon, with the women’s 6K following at 1:15 p.m.

At the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships last weekend, Awad was the first Ivy to cross the finish line and placed fifth overall with a time of 29:49. Whiting was also the first Quaker to cross the line and placed 23rd overall at 20:50. Both Quakers are competing at the cross country national championships for the first time, with Whiting being the first freshman in program history.

The Quakers will find themselves among each field comprised of 38 teams and 31 individuals, along with familiar faces from Villanova, Princeton, and Dartmouth.
