Red & Blue Scrimmages Will Take Place Saturday

PHILADELPHIA - The Penn men’s and women’s basketball teams will be unveiled Saturday morning, when both teams participate in their annual Red & Blue Scrimmages at The Palestra. The men will tip things off at 10:45 a.m., followed by the women at 11:30 a.m. The games will take place ahead of the homecoming football game against Brown, which is slated for a noon kickoff.

Admission to Saturday’s basketball event is free, and it is open to the public.

Under John R. Rockwell Head Coach of Men’s Basketball Glen Miller, who enters his third season with the program, the men’s basketball team is looking for another successful season. Penn returns four starters and 12 letterwinners from last season, when the Quakers went 8-6 and finished third in the Ivy League despite having by far the youngest lineup in the conference. Penn returns Tyler Bernardini, last year’s Ivy League and Philadelphia Big 5 Rookie of the Year, who scored more points than any freshman in Penn history and averaged 12.9 points per game. Overall, the Quakers return six of their top seven leading scorers from a year ago, as well as their leaders in assists (Harrison Gaines), steals (Jack Eggleston) and blocked shots (Andreas Schreiber). Recently, Penn was picked to finish second in the Ivy League in the conference’s official media poll.

The women, meanwhile, have a bright future ahead of them ashead coach Patrick Knappreturns all but one starter from last year’s squad as well as all ofhis top reserves. Penn’s top six in scoring and minutes are back for the 2008-09 campaign. Senior Carrie Biemer returns with her 13.9 ppg and 4.1 rpg, while sophomore Kim Adams and senior Kelly Scott averaged 9.0 and 8.9 ppg, respectively, last season. Junior Sarah Bucar’s team-leading 90 assists and 30 steals from 2007-08 will also be back in the lineup. Penn finished sixth in the Ivy League last season, but ended on a high note with three wins in its final four games. Expect the Quakers to cause some damage in the Ivy League this season.

The teams will begin their regular seasons the weekend of November 14-15, with the women at Lehigh on Friday the 14th at 7 p.m. and the men taking a trip to North Carolina on Saturday the 15th at 4 p.m.
