Ron Berkowsky in First Place After Day One of Men's Fencing NCAAs

COLUMBUS – Ron Berkowsky sits in first place after Day One of the 2008 NCAA Men’s Fencing Foil Championships at Ohio State. As a team, Penn is nestled in seventh place overall with one day of competition left.

Ron, a senior and three-time first-team All-American, won 13 of his 14 bouts in foil action to stake his claim to first place. He is followed closely by Andreas Horanyi from Ohio State. These two met in the gold medal match in 2007, with Horanyi winning on the last touch. The two are scheduled to meet on Sunday in the final round of preliminary action.

Another Berkowsky, Jon, sits in tenth place in men’s sabre after Day One. He won seven of 14 bouts on day one to earn his spot in the top ten. He currently is six wins behind first place, but more importantly, four wins behind fourth place and a spot in the semifinals/

Matthew Kolasa won six bouts in sabre on Day One to find himself in 16th place.

The final member of the men’s squad in action on Saturday was Ben Wieder in epee. He won five matches to end up in 19th place after the first day of competition.

Fencing resumes on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. with the completion of the preliminary rounds. The semi-final bouts will follow and the gold medal matches will take place at approximately 2 p.m.
