Rutgers Edges Women's Crew for Class of '89 Plate

PHILADELPHIA - Rutgers narrowly beat out the Penn women's rowing team Saturday for the Class of '89 Plate, winning by just one point in the overall combined race standings.

Penn won two of the four races contested on the Schuylkill, winning the second varsity 8 and the varsity 4.

In the varsity 8, the Quakers (7:19.1) finished third behind Rutgers (7:12.9) and Cornell (7:16.6).

But Penn was strong in its two victories, winning both races comfortably. In the second varsity 8, the Quakers crossed the line in 7:30.0, 7.6 seconds ahead of Rutgers and 12 seconds up on the Big Red. In the varsity 4, Penn's 8:14.8 easily beat Rutgers' 8:31.7.

In the novice 8, Penn came in second, less than six seconds off Cornell's pace of 7:31.4.

The Quakers race again out of Boathouse Row on April 22 in the Award Plaque race against Princeton and Dartmouth.
