PHILADELPHIA - The Ivy League has announced its weekly award winners in women's soccer, and University of Pennsylvania freshman midfielder Emily Sands was tabbed as the Ivy League Rookie of the Week.
This is Sands' first weekly honor, and the first for the team in 2016.
Sands earned the award by playing a part in three of the Quakers' four goals during a pair of 2-1 wins, against Lafayette and Delaware. She assisted senior Olivia Blaber's opening goal against the Leopards on Friday, then scored the first goal and assisted classmate Emma Loving's eventual winner two days later against the Blue Hens. Through four matches, Sands is tied with Loving for the team lead in points; both have six.
Penn has won three matches in a row since a season-opening loss to the University of Maryland. The Red and Blue are at home twice this weekend, hosting Towson on Friday at 7 p.m. before entertaining neighborhood rival Drexel on Sunday at 5 p.m.
