Penn junior Sean Barrett is not unlike many college students during their summer vacation, using golf as a way to relax and unwind. But unlike most, Barrett is not golfing for leisure. He is at work and the work paid off on July 25 as the Pacific Palisades native carded a 140 over two days to earn a spot in the 2005 U.S. Amateur Championship to be held Aug. 22-28 at the Merion Golf Club and the Philadelphia Country Club.

"He's played very well this season and after, including placing second at the Ivy League Championship," said Director of Penn Golf Francis Vaughn. "It is a great honor to play in this event especially with it being held in Penn's back yard."

The 2005 U.S. Amateur Championship will be held simultaneously at the Merion Golf Club and the Philadelphia Country Club, beginning with two days of stroke play on Aug. 22-23. After the two-day event, the field will be paired down to 64 golfers and all of the action will move to Merion Golf Club for five days of match play with the champion crowned on Aug. 28.

Barrett joins former Penn golfers Peyton Wallace and Kieran Doherty on a list of Quakers to qualify for the U.S. Amateur. The Penn men's golf team finished third at the 2005 Ivy League Championship this past spring. It was the seventh time in the past eight years that the Red and Blue had finished in the top-three at the event.
