BURLINGTON, Vt. - Abigail Egan scored the only goal of the game to lead Penn fiedl hockey to a 1-0 victory over the University of Vermont in the opening game of the Sheraton Catamount Classic on Saturday afternoon at Moulton Winder Field.
In the first game of the classic, Vermont (0-5) controlled the flow early, keeping the ball in the Quaker half of the field. The Catamounts had their best scoring opportunity just over 17 minutes in when sophomore Sarah Becque blasted a shot off a penalty corner, but Penn keeper Kieran Sweeney made the stop.
In the 48th minute, senior Sarah Warner carried the ball deep into UVM territory and sent it towards the cage from just outside the circle. Egan stepped in front and deflected it in to give the Quakers a 1-0 lead and provided all they would need in the very evenly played game.
Sweeney finished with four saves in goal for the Quakers. Vermont held a 5-4 edge in corners, while both teams recorded nine shots in the contest.
New Hampshire defeated UC Davis 2-0 in the second game of the classic.
Penn (2-2) returns to action on day two of the Catamount Classic when it takes on New Hampshire on Sunday starting at 2:30 p.m.
