PHILADELPHIA -The University of Pennsylvania women’s soccer team celebrated Senior Night in style on Saturday, as seniors Clara Midgley and Kaitlyn Moore scored in the first half to propel the Quakers to a 2-0 win over Brown.
With the victory, Penn improved to 7-5-3 overall and guaranteed itself a winning overall record this season -- something that has happened in every one of the 15 seasons that Darren Ambrose has been head coach. The Quakers are now 2-3-1 in Ivy League play.
Saturday’s match was the final home game for six seniors -- Haley Cooper, Lauren Hammond, Nikoletta Georgalis, Katherine Myhre, Midgley and Moore. They played a central role in the victory, and that allowed the match to end with all six of them on the pitch in a festive atmosphere. The seniors willend their careers with a staggering 12-1-1 mark at Rhodes Field against Ivy League competition.
It was Midgley who got things started less than five minutes into the match. She had an initial shot that was blocked by a Brown defender, but freshman Juliana Provini collected the rebound and left it for Midgley who pinged a second shot that slid inside the left post.
The second goal was a beauty, start to finish. Olivia Blaber sent a long throw-in from the right side that landed at Anna Estep’s feet. Estep gave the slightest nudge, to the left foot of Moore who was facing the goal about 20 yards out. Moore one-timed a shot that went into the side netting inside the far post to double the Quakers’ lead.
Brown (6-7-3, 1-3-2 Ivy) pressed the action a bit more in the second half, but Kalijah Terilli was equal to every task and kept the clean sheet most of the way -- Myhre filled in for the final few minutes -- as Penn posted its second straight shutout and its seventh this season.
Penn will close out its 2014 season next Saturday at Princeton. The Quakers and the Tigers will kick off at 3 p.m.
