PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania men's and women's fencing team will be represented with four women and three men at the NCAA Championships in Houston, Texas. Holly Buechel, Abby Emerson, Ilana Sinkin and Cassandra Partyka were selected for the women. Ron Berkowsky, Michael Galligan and Matthew Kolasa will represent the men's team.
Buechel finished fifth in the epee at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional at Duke University. Sinkin, who placed second, and Emerson, sixth, will represent the Quakers in the foil. Partyka placed fourth at the Regional, is Penn's lone competitior in the saber. Zoya Abdikulova was ranked high enough to be selected, but only two fencers per weapon per school may compete.
Berkowsky had the men's highest finish at the Regional, coming in third. Weaponmate, Galligan placed seventh. Kolasa was Penn's only competitior in the saber, he took fifth place. Sophomore Corey Purcell was named an alternate in the foil. He finished 10th at the Regional.
The NCAA Championships will take place from March 16-19 in Houston, Texas.
