Philadelphia Seven University of Pennsylvania field hockey players were named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division I Academic Squad late last week. The student-athletes selected were nominated by Penn Head Coach Val Cloud and have achieved a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30 through the first semester of the 2004-05 academic year.
Seniors Bernice Ravache, Samantha Somach, junior Kelly McFadden, sophomores Tracy Statter and Melina Tsui and freshmen Melissa Black and Nicole Black all earned the distincton. This is Somach’s third time on the academic team and the second for Raveche.
Somach is just one of three Quakers to receive the honor three times. The Allentown, Pa. native will graduate in May with a degree in sociology, while Raveche will graduate with a dual degree in anthropology and health and societies. McFadden is majoring in health and societies in the College of Arts and Sciences, while Statter, Tsui, Black and Black are all enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences and are undecided.
Penn concluded the 2004 season with a 13-4 record and earned a share of the Ivy League Championship going 6-1 in Ancient Eight action. The Quakers finished third in the Philly City 6 standings with a 3-1 record.
