Shearn Wins Silver at USA Junior Championships

EUGENE, Ore. - Rising sophomore Brendan Shearn finished second in the 10,000 meters at the USA Junior Outdoor Championships at historic Hayward Field on Sunday. The silver medal also earned Shearn a spot on Team USA for the 2014 IAAF World Junior Championships.

Shearn nearly earned gold in the event. After more than 30 minutes of racing on a rather warm Oregon night, the Asland, Pa., native lost by just one second to Georgetown's Jonathan Green. However, the top two finishers in each event at the USA Junior Championships earn a chance to represent Team USA at the World Junior Championships, and Shearn was six seconds faster than the bronze finisher. Shearn finished in 30:55.52 to claim his spot over the 19 competitors in the event.

Shearn can now compete for Team USA at the World Junior Championships which are also at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., July 22-27. The 2014 edition of the IAAF World Junior Championships mark the first time the event has ever been held in the United States.
