Senior CLASS Award Release (pdf)

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Thirty candidates have been announced for the 2013 Senior CLASS Award in volleyball and the list includes University of Pennsylvania senior libero Dani Shepherd. Eligible candidates must be senior-athletes who have displayed both on-field and off-field excellence.

The Senior CLASS Award-CLASS is an acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School-is one of the most prestigious awards in college athletics. The award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

Last year, Shepherd led NCAA Division I in digs per set (6.56) and was named AVCA Honorable Mention All-America, the second honoree in Penn history and first since 2003. Shepherd was also an All-Region selection by the AVCA, the third selection in Penn history. Named the Ivy League’s first-ever Defensive Player of the Year, Shepherd recorded 617 digs, which is a Penn single-season record, and was named first-team All-Ivy for the second time in her career.

“Despite all of Dani’s individual accolades, she always puts her team first,” said head coach Kerry Carr. “She has taken the role of captain to heart, after being nominated by her peers, and has concentrated her efforts on the team goal of winning a conference championship.”

Shepherd enters the 2013 season with 1,350 digs, which is third all-time in the Penn record books, and she holds five of the top-six single-game records for digs.

“She could easily be focused on breaking more records, but her one singular goal is to improve our team defense and make sure everyone contributes and understands their roles on the team,” Carr said.“Her character and commitment to her team is paramount to our success on and off the court.”

The 30 candidates will be narrowed down to 10 finalists in October by a national media committee. Candidates’ names will be placed on official ballots that will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches, and fans to determine the recipient.

The one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the community, classroom, character, and competition will be presented the Senior CLASS Award during the 2013 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship in December.
