PHILADELPHIA - Six singles players and two doubles pairings have been selected to take part in the Northeast ITA Regional. In singles, Sol Eskenazi, Alex Ion, and Stephanie Do are all in the main draw. Daniela DePaoli, Jaime Yapp-Shing, and Emma Whitfield are in the qualifying draw and will have to win qualifying matches to enter the main draw. In doubles, Eskenazi and Yapp-Shing along with Do and Ion will be in the doubles draw. DePaoli and Whitfield have been named second alternates into this draw and will compete if two other pairings are unable to go.
The Northeast ITA Regional is being hosted by Yale. The tournament will run from Friday, October 21 through Tuesday, October 25. The winners in singles and doubles will advance to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships. Detailed information will be available throughout the weekend on the Northeast ITA Regional Championship page.
Eskenazi is currently 6-1 after playing in two tournaments this fall. She captured the Columbia Invitational Flight A championship and advanced to the Cissie Leary semifinals. Ion has also made an impressive freshman debut in her short time at Penn. She is 8-2 this fall, playing in three tournaments. Ion went 1-1 at the William & Mary tournament, but the first win was the beginning of an eight-match winning streak. During that streak, Ion captured the Columbia Invitational Flight B championship and advanced to the semifinals of the Cissie Leary tournament. Do has played in two tournament this fall and is 3-3 in those matches. She went 2-1 at the William & Mary Invitational and advanced to the Round of 32 at the Cissie Leary Invitational.
Entered in the qualifying draw, Yapp-Shing owns a 1-1 record in singles after being limited in the early part of the season. Yapp-Shing started the fall with a tough defeat at the William & Mary Invitational and won her opening round match at the Cissie Leary tournament, but was forced to default out following the victory. DePaoli enters the qualifying draw with a 4-3 record. She went 2-1 at the William & Mary Invitational and advanced to the Round of 32 at the Cissie Leary tournament, finishing 2-2 in that event. Whitfield brings a 2-3 record into the weekend. Her fall season has been highlighted by her run to the finals of the William & Mary Invitational in Flight E.
In doubles, Eskenazi and Yapp-Shing are a perfect 7-0 when playing together this fall. The duo started out the season capturing the Columbia Invitational doubles and continued that success at the Cissie Leary Invitational where they again captured the doubles draw. Yapp-Shing also picked up another doubles win with DePaoli at the William & Mary Invitational.
Do and Ion have played just three matches together this fall, but made the most of their opportunity together, winning two matches and advancing to the quarterfinals of the Cissie Leary Invitational before falling to Eskenazi and Yapp-Shing. Ion is 5-4 in all her doubles matches this fall, while Do is 4-3 overall in doubles this season.
If they get into the draw, DePaoli and Whitfield will present a very solid pairing for any doubles team. The duo only played in the Cissie Leary Invitational together this fall, but won two matches and advanced to the quarterfinals before being knocked out by a seeded pairing. DePaoli has also played doubles with Yapp-Shing this fall, while Whitfield has played doubles in just the one event.
Draws for the ITA Regional have yet to be announced. The tournament will get underway this Friday at 8 a.m. with two rounds of prequalifying and the Round of 64 and the Round of 32 in doubles.
