Softball Announces Six Newcomers for 2016

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania’s head coach of softball, Leslie King, has officially announced the Quakers’ freshman class for the 2015-16 season. Six student-athletes will join a Penn squad that won its fourth-consecutive Ivy League South Division title last year.

“We are excited to introduce the Penn Softball Class of 2019!” said King. “We add six extremely talented freshmen to a very experienced returning squad that we feel great about. They hail from five different states and bring a wealth of talent to the team.”

Alexis Corini, Sarah Cwiertnia, Jessica England, Hannah Gibbons, Joy Lewis and Sam Pederson compose this year’s recruiting class and will merge with a team returning eight players who saw action in the Ivy League Championship Series last spring.

Alexis Corini – Catcher

All-League softball performer at Valley Christian High School (2015) … Recognized as All-Mercury News Softball Honorable Mention as a junior and Team MVP as a sophomore … Named Mercury News VCHS “Top Player of the Game” five times during her senior season … Received Scholar Athlete honors all four years of her high school career.

Personal: Daughter of Julie and Nick Corini … Enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Sarah Cwiertnia - Infielder

High School: Four-year softball letterman and team captain at Santa Margarita Catholic High School … Two-time All-Trinity League First Team selection and Offensive Player of the Year … Four-time recipient of the Academic Athlete Award … Named Trinity League Academic Athlete of the Year as a senior … Four-year member of the California Scholarship Federation.
Personal: Daughter of Lynnette and Douglas Cwiertnia … Enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Jessica England – Infielder

Hannah Gibbons – Infielder

High School: Four-year letterman and team captain at Waynesburg Central High School … Batted .614 as a junior and was named Pennsylvania Softball Coaches Association First Team All-State and the Herald Standard’s Softball Player of the Year … Four-time member of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette All-Section Team and two-time Observer Reporter First Team All-District honoree (2014-15) … Class Valedictorian … Earned AP Scholar with Honors recognition.
Personal: Daughter of Renee and Robert Gibbons … Enrolled in the Wharton School of Business.

Joy Lewis – Pitcher

Personal: Daughter of Barbara and Walter … Enrolled in the College of Arts & Sciences.

Sam Pederson – Second Base/Shortstop
Scottsdale, Ariz. | Desert Mountain High School

High School: Four-year varsity softball player and team captain at Desert Mountain High School … Three-time Arizona All-State honorable mention (2013-15) … Three-time Arizona DI Academic All-State First Team selection (2013-15) … Named to 2013 Scottsdale All-City Team and NFCA Western Region Second Team … Member of 2012 League Championship team … Three-time winner of the DMHS Varsity Scholar Athlete Award (2013-15) and achieved Gold Honor Roll in each semester of high school career.
Personal: Daughter of Jean and Chris Pederson … Enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences.
