Softball Drops Two to a Pair of Loyola's

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The University of Pennsylvania softball team (5-5) closed out its spring break trip losing to Loyola Marymount (15-9) 8-1 and Loyola Chicago 6-1 on Friday.

Penn starter Michelle Rehm (0-2) held LMU scoreless until the third when Kristen Slouber hit a two-run homerun. Next batter Margo Pineda hit a line drive back to the circle that hit Rehm’s pitching hand, forcing her to leave the game. Olivia Mauro came in relief to get the final out of the third.

The Lions tacked on two more in the fourth on a two-run homer by Brittany Bassett. The Lions scored four more in the top of the seventh to increase their lead to 8-1.

Penn got on the board in the sixth, scoring one run. Christina Khosravi, who has been one of the Quakers most consistent hitters on the trip, doubled to right field. Meghan Cowen singled to left to drive in Khosravi.

In game two, Loyola Chicago struck first, putting up four runs in the second. They sent 10 batters to the plate in the inning. Kristin Gushka, who led off the inning with a walk, scored on a double by Katerina Krause. Krause and Tricia Oberhaus scored on a single by Courtney Sullivan. Two batters later, the Ramblers pulled of a squeeze with runners on first and third to score their fourth run of the inning.

Penn scored its first run in the fourth inning. The Quakers used three singles to manufacture the run. Annie Kinsey, who had a one-out single, scored on a single by Julia Cheney. Khosravi also singled in the fourth.

Loyola Chicago answered back with two runs in the bottom half. Lindsay O’Gean had a lead off singled and scored on a double by Guska. Guska then scored on a single by Raven Gengler.

Matadors starter, Krista Crosson pitched a complete game allowing just one run. Freshman Emily Denstedt took the loss.

The Red and Blue will be off until Wednesday, March 15 when they play at Delaware.
