Kissimmee, Fla. The University of Pennsylvania softball team dropped a hard-fought battle to Lehigh, 6-2, this afternoon at the Rebel Spring Games.
The Penn bats were hot in the bottom of the first as the Quakers quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead. The first three batters reached to load the bases. With the infield drawn in, junior Meghan Cowen delivered a single through the right side to plate sophomore Kaelin Ainley, who had walked to lead off the game. The Red and Blue added a second run on a bloop single by junior Jen Nichols.
Lehigh added a run of its own in the top of the fourth inning as Julie Sterrett singled to left center to score Mary Weider. The Mountain Hawks tied the score in the top of the sixth inning as Kelly Kliewer scored on a successfully executed squeeze play. Lehigh took a 4-2 lead two batters later as Kate Arico roped a single to left driving in two runs.
The Quakers threatened in the bottom of the sixth as Brandi King reached on a dropped third strike. Rookie Christina Khosravi followed with a single up the middle and Melissa Haffner walked to load the bases, but reliever Heather Hamasaki was able to quash the Red and Blue’s attack. Lehigh added two more runs in the top of the seventh to make the score 6-2.
Freshman Ann Ferracane had a solid collegiate debut going five and a third innings giving up three runs, two earned, on five hits while striking out six.
