CLEARWATER, Fla. – On Day Two of the Under Armour Invitational hosted by South Florida, the University of Pennsylvania softball team dropped matchups to Texas State and Illinois. Facing off against two of their toughest non-conference opponents on the schedule, the Quakers couldn’t muster much offense in 9-1 and 8-0 defeats.
Texas State came out swinging in Game One -- scoring four in the opening frame, three in the second and a pair in the third.
Penn’s lone run came off the bat of Korinne Raby, who knocked a RBI single through the left side in the fourth. Vera Barnwell, who pinch-ran for sophomore Jurie Joyner, scored on the play. Back-to-back singles from Joyner and Alexis Sargent set the table for the score.
Although you couldn’t tell from the scoreboard, Penn did have some other opportunities versus Texas State. The Quakers left five runners on base in five innings, including a pair in the second and two in the fourth.
In Game Two, the Illini’s Taylor Edwards tossed a three-hit, complete-game shutout of the Quakers. Sargent got the start for the Red and Blue, battling for four innings. Lauren Li pitched 1.2 frames in relief, allowing two earned runs.
The Quakers finish out the first half of their Florida slate tomorrow. Penn will take on Detroit at 11:15 a.m. Follow @Penn_Softball for live updates.
