Softball Gears Up for Battle with Neighbor Drexel

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania softball team will hit the road on Wednesday but won’t travel far as the Quakers cross the street into Dragon territory. The Red and Blue will head to Drexel for a single midweek game at the Drexel Softball Field. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.

Last Time Out
After dropping game three of the four-game series, four runs in the top of the sixth during game four propelled the University of Pennsylvania softball team to split with Cornell on Sunday at the Niemand-Robison Field and win the series, 3-1. The Quakers dropped the first of the day 6-2 but came back in the second to win 7-6. Junior captain Lauren Li brought two runs in while freshman Jurie Joyner brought in the tying and what-was-the winning run with a homer to right field. Across the two days, Li was 7-for-12 at the plate, drove in seven, and slugged 1.083. Joyner was 6-for-14 and hit two home runs to bring her season total to six. The freshman has now hit a home run off of four of the five Ivy teams the Red and Blue have faced so far.

Scouting Drexel (13-15, 3-8 CAA)
The Dragons are coming off a tough weekend series loss to conference opponent Hofstra, dropping all three games. After taking the Pride to 11 innings in the first game, Drexel was unable to come away with the victory and fell 4-3. The Dragons were only able to score one run in each of the next two games, dropping the second 11-1 in 6 innings and the final game, 10-1.

Senior outfielder Leticia Matsuoka – Hit a home run in the 10-1 loss to Hofstra … Has started all 28 games this season … Leads the team with 5 home runs and .609 slugging percentage.

Weekly Honors
After opening Ivy League South Division play with a 3-1 series win over Cornell this past weekend, the University of Pennsylvania softball team saw junior captain Lauren Li and freshman Jurie Joyner add weekly honors to their resumes. Announced by the Ivy League on Tuesday afternoon, Li collected her second Player of the Week honor this season while Joyner earned her third consecutive Rookie of the Week accolade.

This week’s awards come as no surprise as the two players continue their banner seasons staying hot and leading the Quakers at the plate. Both are hitting over .400 and slugging over .650. Having a nine-game hit streak already this year, Li is currently at four. Joyner’s longest hit streak was 10 and she is currently at six.
