PHILADELPHIA – The Penn softball team (4-10) will welcome Lafayette (3-6) to the friendly confines of Penn Park on Friday for an afternoon doubleheader. The games, originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon, were moved to Friday in advance of the rain forcast.
The Quakers have struggled on the road to this point, and will look forward to playing at home for this first time this season-- Penn posted an 18-3 record there in 2012.
Additionally, the matchup features two teams that have struggled with the bat offensively this year. The Red and Blue have the edge, hitting .212 as a team, whereas the Leopards are hitting just .173. Each team will be coming off losses in their most recent games. Penn fell at Saint Joseph’s, 5-0, on March 13 and Lafayette dropped at tight road game at Towson, 2-1, on March 10.
In the early going, the Quakers are led by Brooke Coloma at the plate. The 2012 first-team All-Ivy outfielder leads all regular starters with a .323 batting average, the only one hitting above .300. The senior needs just 18 more RBIs to become Penn’s all-time leader.
Elysse Gorney has also been seeing the ball well, as the junior quad-captain leads the team with a .432 on-base percentage and eight walks. Korinne Raby, one of four freshmen on this year’s squad, leads the team in the power category – she is slugging .400 and is tied for the Ivy lead with two home runs.
Alexis Borden is leading the way in the circle. The reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Year has been baffling hitters with her patented change-up and leads the team with a 2.10 earned run average. The sophomore leads the Ivies in strikeouts (50) and innings pitched (50) and needs just 26 more strikeouts and six more victories to become Penn’s all-time leader in both categories.
Lafayette enters Saturday having not yet played a home game either. The Leopards are led by Madeline Allen who is hitting .316 and is currently on a three-game streak. Melissa Robinson leads them in the circle with a 4.37 ERA and a 2-5 record.
The action is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. and live stats and live radio will be available for both games of the doubleheader. Make sure to follow @UPennSoftball for live in-game updates as well.
