Softball Hosts Neighbor Drexel for Midweek Duel

PHILADELPHIA – Before the University of Pennsylvania softball team plays its second four-game South Division Series this weekend, the Quakers will take on neighboring school, Drexel. Originally slated for a 6 p.m. start time at Penn Park, the single game has been bumped up to 4 p.m., due to expected dropping temperatures. The Red and Blue host the Dragons for a single midweek contest before traveling to Princeton.

Last Time Out

Penn (12-15, 7-4 Ivy) opened South Division play with Cornell (13-19, 5-5 Ivy) last weekend at Penn Park, where the Quakers took three of the contests – one on Saturday and two on Sunday. On Saturday, the two teams split the day, with both teams winning by a margin of 9-0 in five innings; On Sunday, the Red and Blue swept the Big Red, winning both games 9-8 with the first one ending in eight innings.

After a lopsided day, as both teams won in five innings by a score of 9-0, Penn and Cornell came out swinging for a Sunday slugfest in which the Quakers prevailed. In both games, the Big Red took a 2-0 lead after the top of the first.

A total of ten home runs were hit by the two teams: Cornell (5), Penn (5).

Team Stats against Cornell

In the series with the Big Red, freshman Leah Allen led the way in nine different categories. Allen finished the series with the most runs scored (5), hits (7), triples (1), home runs (3), RBI (8), and total bases (19). She also recorded the best batting average (.636), slugging percentage (1.727), and on base percentage (.714).

Sophomore Kanani Datan also played well in the Cornell series, going 6-for-11 and notched the second most hits (6) on the team. Datan recorded the second best batting average (.525), slugging percentage (.727), and on base percentage (.667).

Other notable performances include freshman Alexis Sargent’s .714 slugging percentage, two home runs, 5 RBI, and 10 total bases; junior tri-captain Sydney Turchin’s RBI (5), total bases (7), .500 slugging percentage, and most doubles (3).

Defensively, sophomore Lauren Li captured her first win of the season in the last game of the series, while junior Alexis Borden pitched two complete games, earning two wins and one shut out. Borden tossed eight strikeouts.

Scouting Drexel (15-17, 3-6 CAA)

In a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series with James Madison at Drexel Field, the Dragons first played the Dukes in a doubleheader, splitting the day. Drexel defeated James Madison in a come-from-behind win, 7-6, but dropped the next contest, 7-3. A second loss came the next day when the Dukes edged out the Dragons, 5-4, in a game that exchanged the lead five times and included five home runs (between the two teams).

Junior infielder Leticia Matsuoka – Is hitting .348 and has a .533 slugging percentage -- she leads the team in both categories … Has most hits with 32 and doubles with 12 … Second most RBI on team with 25.

Senior Pitcher/Outfielder Shelby Taylor – Is 11-7 and has the best ERA (2.69) on the team … Recorded most strikeouts at 99 … Along with being a presence in the circle, she leads the team with 6 home runs … Has second most RBI with 28 and second best slugging percentage (.531).
