PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania softball doubleheader with Army West Point, originally scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m., has been pushed up to Friday at 4 p.m. due to the threat of inclement weather this weekend.
This will be the middle set of three-straight home doubleheaders for the Quakers. In fact, after starting the season with 10 games in Florida during spring break, the Red and Blue are home for 12 of their first 14 games back home.
Penn vs. Army West Point
The Quakers and the Black Knights are meeting for the first time since the 2012 season, when Army West Point came down to play in the Penn Spring Invitational. Penn won the matchup in that event, 6-3.
Who’s Hot For Penn?
*How about the day Leah Allen had on Wednesday against Lafayette? The junior hit a grand slam in Game 1, providing all the runs in that 4-0 win, then followed up with a two-run triple early in Game 2 to provide all the runs in the Quakers’ 2-1 win.
*Senior Lauren Li—a first-team All-Ivy player last year—is the team leader with 14 hits so far this season after earning three more on Wednesday; one of just two players to start and play in all 12 games so far, she hit .379 on the Florida trip and had two doubles, a triple and two home runs.
*Freshman Sam Pederson has played in 11 games so far, and had a team-high seven RBI over nine appearances in Florida. She has scored four runs.
*Allen, the 2014 Ivy League and ECAC Rookie of the Year, is up to 11 hits (including three triples) and a team-high 12 RBI. She is the other Quakers player to start all 12 games so far.
*Allen had two stolen bases in Florida, giving her 28 for her career which is fifth on Penn’s all-time list.
*Junior Cedar Slovacek had Penn’s other HR on the Florida trip, her first at Penn.
*Three other players had six hits on the trip: seniors Korinne Raby and Kanani Datan, and freshman Jessica England.
*Last year’s Ivy League Rookie of the Year as well as a first-team All-Ivy selection, sophomore Jurie Joyner had four hits during the spring trip and also knocked in a pair of runs.
*In the circle, junior Alexis Sargent—the reigning Ivy League Pitcher of the Week—lowered her earned-run average to 1.43 with a shutout in Game 1 on Wednesday. She has a 5-1 record, 33 strikeouts and just five walks.
*Sophomore Mason Spichiger got the Game 2 win on Wednesday, lowering her ERA to 1.80 in the process.
For Army West Point...
*Three different players have more than 20 hits this season: Mae Wadyka (23), Alee Rashenkas (23) and Kasey McCravey 922). Another, Ashley Yoo, has 19 hits. All are batting .310 or better so far this season.
*Wadyka also has a team-high 10 stolen bases, while McCravey has eight. As a team, the Black Knights are 39-of-48, stealing nearly two a game.
*Maddie Kim has Army West Point’s only home run this season, and nine different players have at least seven RBI so far.
*Kristen West has a 7-1 record in the circle and a 2.53 ERA, while Renee Poirier has a 2.29 ERA and Caroline Smith has a 3.83 ERA. All three of them have made at least 11 appearances this season and pitched at least 40 innings.
