Softball Soars Past Hawks, 4-1

Georgetown, Del. – Freshman Ann Ferracane threw a complete and sophomore Kaelin Ainley homered to help the University of Pennsylvania softball team to a 4-1 victory over Saint Joseph’s this afternoon at the Mizuno/Anderson Bash at the Beach.

The Quakers (5-7) struck first in the top of the third inning as Meghan Cowen scored on a single by freshman Annie Kinsey. Sophomore Teresa Leyden scored Penn’s second run of the inning coming around to score on a single by Brandi King. Saint Joseph’s responded in the bottom of the inning with a sacrifice fly to make the score 2-1.

In the top of the fourth, Melissa Haffner led the inning off with a single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Cowen to put the Quakers ahead 3-1. The scoring continued in the seventh inning as Ainley homered with two outs in the inning.

The Red and Blue bats were solid up and down the lineup as four different Quakers drove in runs, including Ainley whose solo home run was the first of the season. Kinsey finished the day going 2-for-3 with a run batted in.

Ferracane pitched the Quakers first complete game of the season scattering six hits over seven innings with a strikeout. The lone Hawks’ run was unearned.

Penn is back in action at the Bash at the Beach tomorrow, March 19, facing Monmouth at noon and Delaware State at 2 p.m.
