Softball Splits a Pair to Open 2016

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Seeing their first action of 2016, the University of Pennsylvania softball team split a pair of contests against St. Bonaventure and Providence on Day One of the Under Armour Invitational. The Quakers rebounded from a 5-1 defeat to the Bonnies with a 3-0 win over Providence.

It was team effort in the circle, leading the way against Providence in Game Two of the day. Alexis Sargent, Courtney Cuzick and Mason Spichiger combined for a three-hit, complete-game shut out of the Friars. Sargent threw the first three innings, striking out six and getting the win. Spichiger and Cuzick put together the final four frames, allowing no hits and striking out six of their own.

JuniorCedar Slovacek provided all the offense that the Quakers would need, launching a two-run home run in the second inning. The sophomore smashed the first pitch of the at bat over the left field wall for her first-career long ball.

Providence looked to be on the comeback trail in the third, but the Quakers stayed strong. With the bases loaded and one out, Sargent came up with a pair of huge strikeouts to keep the two-run lead.

Penn added one more insurance run in the sixth. Back-to-back hits from Leah Allen and Hanna Gibbons set the table, and a sacrifice fly from Alexis Sargent lifted Penn to a 3-0 edge. Spichiger closed the door in the seventh to earn her second-career save.

The Quakers struggled from the dish in the first game of the day, mustering to put just one run across. The Red and Blue didn’t record their first hit until the fourth inning, with Sargent doubling down the right-field line. Korinne Raby followed with a double of her own, and the Quakers were on the board.

Penn had its chances in the sixth, but couldn’t capitalize on getting runners on second and third with no outs.

Freshman Joy Lewis compiled a nice outing out the bullpen, pitching three scoreless innings in relief.
