Game 1 – South Dakota: Box Score
Game 2 – Akron: Box Score
KISSIMMEE, FLA. – The Penn softball team (4-9) completed its stay in Florida on Friday afternoon with an afternoon doubleheader against South Dakota (15-9) and Akron (6-6). The Quakers dominated the Coyotes in the first game, 7-1, avenging their loss from earlier in the week. In the second game, the Red and Blue fell short, losing 7-2 to the Zips.
WP: Alexis Borden (2-5), 7 IP, 7 H, ER, BB, 8 K
LP: Madison Frain (3-5), 0.1 IP, 3 ER, 3 BB
Borden got the victory in Game 1, and finally received some offensive support to complement her stellar work from inside the circle. Before she even picked up the ball, Penn was in front 3-0 after a wild top of the first. With one out, the South Dakota pitcher proceeded to hit Elysse Gorney (2-for-3, 2 R, RBI, HBP) and then walk three consecutive batters, scoring Penn’s first run of the game – that would be the end of the day for the Coyote pitcher. Bridget Ellsworth (2-for-3, 2 RBI) came to the plate with two outs and hit a shot up the middle for a two-RBI single to complete the scoring for Penn in the first.
Borden would have her only rough inning of the day in the bottom half of the first. She allowed four hits and one run but managed to sneak her way out of a bases loaded, one out jam by striking out the next two South Dakota batters.
Leading 3-1 in the top of the fourth, the Red and Blue would go to work again. Penn would get runners on first and second with two outs and Gorney at the plate. The senior quad-captain hit a single through the left side for her first RBI of the season. In the next at-bat Samantha Erosa (0-for-2, R, BB) would reach safely on an error and that scored Sydney Turchin (0-for-3, R, HBP) from third.
Penn would score one run in each of the next two innings to widen the gap to 7-1, and that would end up being the final as Borden got the victory in her sixth complete game of the season. Another freshman, Lauren Li (1-for-3, 2 RBI, BB) also had a nice game with a couple of runs batted in.
WP: Erin Seiler (3-3), 7 IP, 2 H, 2 K
LP: Lindsay Mann (1-2), 3.2 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, 4 BB, K
The Red and Blue did not fare as well in the second game of Friday’s doubleheader, falling to the Zips 7-2. Mann started off the first inning very well, allowing the leadoff batter to reach on a single but following that up by catching a line drive up the middle and doubling up the runner at first herself. Unfortunately the senior would walk the next batter and give up a two-run homer to left center to the following Akron hitter.
Penn would get one back in the bottom half as Kanani Datan (0-for-3, R) was given the opportunity to showcase her speed. The freshman would reach on a throwing error by Akron’s third baseman and advance all the way to third as the throw sailed into foul territory. A few pitches later, Datan would score on a wild pitch and trim the Zips’ lead in half.
In the bottom of the third, Penn would tie the game at 2-2. Stephanie Caso (0-for-3, R) led off and reached on a fielding error by the shortstop. Case would reach second on a groundout by Datan and was brought home with two outs by a Kayla Dahlerbruch (1-for-3, RBI) single to left center.
Akron, though, would score three runs in the next half inning to jump out to a lead it would never relinquish. With runners on the corners and two outs, Mann would give up another homerun to left center, which would plate three. After another two batters reached safely, Li (3.1 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, BB) would come on in relief to finish the inning and pitch the rest of the game for the Quakers.
The freshman would give up a couple of RBI singles in the top of the sixth, but that was the extent of the damage. The Quakers would not get another hit after the third inning when they scored to tie the game, and the final would be 7-2 in favor of Akron.
Penn will have a few days off to rest from their week-long tour in Florida and will be back in action on March 13 for its first home doubleheader of the season at Penn Park against Saint Joseph’s. The first game is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. and live stats will be available HERE. Make sure to follow @UPennSoftball for live in-game updates as well.
