Softball Splits Doubleheader with Yale

PHILADELPHIA – A day after opening the Ivy League season with a split against Brown, the University of Pennsylvania softball team did the same in a doubleheader versus Yale on Saturday at Penn Park. The Quakers (13-11, 2-2) rebounded from a 9-0 loss in Game One, with a walk-off 6-5 triumph in Game Two.

After being shutout over the first seven innings of the day, the Quakers exploded in the third inning of Game Two. Fueled by seven hits in the frame, the Red and Blue plated five runs and took a 5-1 lead.

Freshman Jessica England began the rally with a one-out bunt single. Sam Pederson followed with a double to right-center, plating her classmate and tying the score at 1-1. From there, it was an onslaught of offense—including six-consecutive hits for the Quakers. Senior Lauren Li knocked a pair of runs in with a double to left field. Leah Allen followed with a RBI knock of her own, while Alexis Sargent capped off the inning with a RBI single to left field.

Down for the first time in the doubleheader, Yale battled back with a pair of runs in both the fourth and the sixth to tie the score at five. Sydney Glover had a pair of RBI hits, while Brittany Labbadia recorded an RBI double in the fourth and a game-tying sac fly in the sixth.

All knotted in the seventh, it was once again Penn’s top of the order delivering in the clutch. Pederson and senior Kanani Datan tallied back-to-back hits to begin the inning, while Li advanced the duo with a perfectly placed sac bunt. With two ducks on the pond, Allen chopped a grounder to second and Pederson raced home for the Quakers’ first walk-off win of the season.

Yale’s Game One triumph was ignited by a seven-hit, seven-run third inning. Sargent (8-3) earned the loss for the Quakers, allowing five earned runs over five innings of work. The Quakers made five errors in the game.
