Softball Splits with Princeton to Win Series 3-1

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania softball team added another division series win under their belt as the Quakers split Princeton at Penn Park on Sunday to take the series, 3-1. In dramatic comeback fashion, the Red and Blue scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth of the first game of the day to propel themselves to a 4-2 victory. The Tigers returned the favor in the following game, coming back from a 5-1 deficit to win 7-5. Now that the four-game series is completed, Penn sits atop the South Division at 10-6 with Princeton right behind at 7-7.

On the day, senior captain Sydney Turchin led the Quakers at the plate hitting .625 (5-for-8). Junior Korinne Raby and senior captain Vanessa Weaver were also hot at the plate, hitting .571 and .500 respectively. The three combined to bring in four of the day’s nine runs.

Game 3 – Penn (19-16, 10-5 Ivy) 4, Princeton (14-21, 6-7 Ivy) 2
WP: Alexis Borden (9-10), 7.0 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K

LP: Erica Nori (0-4), 0.1 IP, 0 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 0 K

After the Tigers opened the game scoring with a home run, the Red and Blue responded when freshman Jurie Joyner doubled to left center and drove in junior captain Lauren Li, who reached on a single up the middle. Princeton took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second but neither team would add more to its totals until the bottom of the sixth.

Pitcher Erica Nori relieved Shanna Christian in the circle and readied to face Li. Throwing three straight balls, Nori finally threw a strike but gave Li a free pass to first with another ball. With one out, another walk and hit by pitch loaded the bases and brought Christian back in the circle. On her first pitch, junior Korinne Raby smacked one up the middle and allowed Li and sophomore Leah Allen to score. A groundout from senior captain Vanessa Weaver provided the third run of the inning and the 4-2 lead.

The defense took the field and shut down the Tigers as senior pitcher Alexis Borden forced the batters to go down in order.

Game 4 – Penn (19-17, 10-6 Ivy) 5, Princeton (15-21, 7-7 Ivy) 7
WP: Claire Klausner (3-1), 2.1 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K

LP: Mason Spichiger (2-2), 0.2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
Save: Shanna Christian (1), 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K

Scoreless through two and a half, Penn took the first lead of the game with two in the bottom of the third. A sac bunt from sophomore Lainey Dorris moved runners into scoring position for Li, who added a sac fly to bring one in. Joyner then brought the next one in with a single through the left side.

After Princeton came within one, the Quakers jumped out to a 5-1 lead with three more runs in the bottom of the fourth.

With bases loaded and no outs, the top of the lineup was back at the plate, and senior captain Sydney Turchin moved Weaver home for an RBI single. Back-to-back groundouts from Dorris and Li allowed sophomore Sydney Kranzmann and freshman Hayley Metcalf to also reach home safely for the four run cushion.

However, the Tigers were back within one when Alyssa Schmidt hit a three-run homer in the top of the fifth.

The Red and Blue looked to add more to the board in the home half with runners at second and third, but with two outs, the runners were left stranded after a groundout.

Princeton didn’t let up on the gas pedal and scored two more in the top of the sixth for its first lead of the day, 6-5.

Penn stranded two more runners in the bottom of the sixth, and the Tigers added one more giving the Quakers one final chance at the plate.

With back-to-back singles from Raby and Weaver, Princeton changed pitchers. After a sac bunt from Kranzmann moved runners into scoring position, two straight outs ended the Red and Blue’s chances and the game.
