PHILADELPHIA - With Ivy League play set to begin this weekend, the Penn softball team will be on the diamond Wednesday with a non-league doubleheader against Lehigh, which serves as the final tune-up before the conference season begins.
The Quakers post a 4-13 record, with the team’s most recent games being a pair of one-run losses at the hands of Monmouth. The Red and Blue continues to be led by freshmen shortstop Jamie Boccanfuso, who is batting .333 with 10 runs batted in. The Quakers’ stable of five pitchers has a staff ERA of 4.05. Jessie Lupardus has been the top performer with a 2-3 record and 2.17 ERA.
The Mountain Hawks are 11-13 on the season and just 4-10 in their last 14 games. Offensively, Lehigh is also led by a freshman, Julie Fernandez, who is second in the Patriot League with a .371 batting average and leads the league in hits (26), doubles (9) and RBI (15). Fernandez is joined by Alisha Gonzales (.317), Jen Colquhoun (.303) and Carly Potock (.302) to give the Mountain Hawks four regulars who are hitting over .300 this season. Lehigh’s pitching staff has allowed 86 runs and holds an ERA of 3.16.
The Mountain Hawks lead the all-time series 31-19 and have won the last five meetings, including a doubleheader sweep last year at Lehigh.
Action gets underway at 3 p.m., Wednesday from Warren Field.
