PHILADELPHIA -- Before the University of Pennsylvania softball team begins Ivy League South Division play with Cornell this weekend, the Quakers (13-13, 4-4 Ivy) will host Philadelphia rival Villanova in a single game on Wednesday at Penn Park. Last Time Out
After a heartbreaking game one loss, Penn took command in game two to split a doubleheader with Yale at Dewitt Family Field. Scouting Villanova (13-18, 4-5 BIG EAST)
In a pair of nonconference contests on Monday, Villanova split the day with Marist, falling in extra innings in game one, 2-1, and winning game two’s pitching duel, 1-0.
Despite dropping game one, junior pitcher Kate Poppe, having pitched a no-hitter against Creighton last Thursday, only allowed two runs off five hits in 7.2 innings, striking out 10 batters. Power pitching seemed to be the theme of the day as sophomore Brette Lawrence took the circle for game two, giving up no runs on five hits, striking out four.
