Softball's ILCS Hopes Lie at Columbia on Saturday

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania softball team aims to close out an Ivy League South Division title as it readies to play a four-game series with Columbia this weekend. The first two games will be at Columbia on Saturday beginning at 12:30 p.m., and the teams will trek to Penn for another doubleheader on Sunday and will celebrate Senior Day. First pitch is set for 12:30 p.m.

Last Time Out
Penn added an important division series win under their belt as the Quakers split Princeton at Penn Park on Sunday to take the series, 3-1. In dramatic comeback fashion, the Red and Blue scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth of the first game of Sunday to propel themselves to a 4-2 victory. The Tigers returned the favor in the following game, coming back from a 5-1 deficit to win 7-5. Now that the four-game series is completed, Penn sits atop the South Division at 10-6 with Princeton right behind at 8-7.

On the day, senior captain Sydney Turchin led the Quakers at the plate hitting .625 (5-for-8). Junior Korinne Raby and senior captain Vanessa Weaver were also hot at the plate, hitting .571 and .500 respectively. The three combined to bring in four of the day’s nine runs.

Scouting Columbia (14-24, 6-10 Ivy)
Columbia’s split a doubleheader against Cornell in its penultimate Ivy League series of the season, taking the first game 6-3 but dropping the second 5-3.

Sophomore pitcher/outfielder Tonia Wu starred in the circle for the Lions in the first game, allowing three runs in her ninth complete game effort of the season. She currently leads Columbia in pitching around the board, with a 2.72 ERA and 83 strikeouts in 118.1 innings.

In the second game, junior Tessa Kroll carried the Lions to a 3-0 lead after five frames, but surrendered three runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh. Her final stats on the day were seven innings pitched with five runs (three earned) on 11 hits with two strikeouts.

At the dish, Wu posted a line of 4-6 with one RBI between both games. Freshman infielder Taylor Troutt added a first-inning single in the first game that plated two Lions, and freshman outfielder Olivia Parker went 2-4 with two runs scored in the first game.

First Meeting: The Quakers defeated the Lions in 1996, 6-2.
Last Meeting:
April 25-26, 2014 – Penn swept Columbia on the first day, winning game one 10-0 in 5 innings and game two 9-1 again in 5 innings. The teams split day two with the Quakers winning the first of the day 3-1 and the Lions taking the final one, 6-5.
Notables:
Dating back to 2011, the Quakers have taken 13 of the 16 games against the Lions, including 11 of them by 4 or more runs.

Pitcher of the Week
Senior Alexis Borden was named this week’s Ivy League Pitcher of the Week for her work in the circle over this past week’s games. Announced by the League Office on Tuesday afternoon, Borden earns her third major honor this season after finishing this week’s games with a 1.53 ERA and 2-0 record against divisional rival Princeton.

The Yorba Linda, Calif. native remains as the League’s leader with 127 strikeouts, which is currently the fifth most strikeouts in a single season for a Quaker (She currently holds three of the top four single-season records.) Against Princeton, the hurler recorded 11 strikeouts across 15.1 innings pitched and only allowed three earned runs. In the first game against the Tigers, she gave up just three hits across seven innings of work and no runs to notch her second shutout of the season.
