COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Brian Spangler of the Penn wrestling team started off his summer vacation with, well, some more wrestling. The rising sophomore competed over the weekend in the FILA Junior World Freestyle Team Trials at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.
Spangler, wrestling at 66 kilograms (145.5 lbs.), fell short of qualifying for the world team but won a match in the highly-competitive weight class. Spangler received a bye in the first round before being pinned by Esai Dominguez in 47 seconds. Spangler thencame back to beat Paul Bjorkstrand, 7-0, 1-0in wrestlebacks before losing to Mark Beaudry, 10-5, 4-1 in the consolation quarterfinals.
Spangler was actually one of two Ivy Leaguers in the 66 kg bracket, with Harvard's J.P. O'Connor also competing.
