LAS VEGAS - Freshman Brian Spangler of the Penn wrestling team added an impressive title to his resume over the weekend, winning a national titleat the FILA Junior Freestyle Nationals in Las Vegas.
Spanglerwas a 6-0, 5-2 winner over Michael Mangrum in the 63 kg (138.75 lbs.) final. Spangler was leading the first period 2-0 when he went into a series of rolls and scored four more points to take the period.
Spangler automatically earns the top seed at the upcoming FILA Junior World Team Trials in Colorado Springs, Colo., on May 25-26, advancing directly into the Championship Series. Spangler also qualifies to represented the United States at the Junior Pan-Am Games later this year.
The FILA Juniors competition consists of the nation's top freestyle wrestlers age 20 and under.
