Spring Trip Finale: Rollins vs. Penn Live Blog

WINTER PARK, Fla. - The Penn baseball team concludes its nine day stay in the sunshine state with a game against Rollins College with first pitch at approximately 11 a.m.

The Quakers have had some ups and downs during the week but look to put it all together as they go for their second consecutive win. In the team's first meeting of the week, Rollins beat the Red and Blue 10-3. In that game, the Quakers loaded the bases three times in the first four innings, but only managed two runs.

Yesterday was a different story as Penn earned their second victory of the year with a 7-5 ten inning affair with Georgetown. It was a team victory as multiple players made plays when their number was called. In particular, the pitching staff gave up just one earned run and held the Hoyas offense at bay. Vince Voiro went the first seven, giving up one earned and striking out five. He was followed by Reid Terry and lefty Kyle Olson, who combined to pitch the eighth. Trey Jennings finished off the game with a scoreless ninth and 10th, earning the victory.

10:50 A few lineup changes for the Quakers. Derek Vigoa will not be starting today, as cocah Cole elects to move Dan Williams over to short and Matt Tellem will be making his first start of the year. Also, Spencer Branigan won't be starting, due to the southpaw Blanton starting. That moves Gordon back to first while Steve Gable gets the start at second. Cusick takes the mound for Penn as he tries to rebound from his start of the year in which he went 5.1 innings, giving up nine earned runs and walking five. The junior needs to work the corners and be sure to not put anything over the center of the plate as Rollins has proved they can hit. Cusick did strike out four in his last start.

Top First: Emilio Pastor leads off for the Quakers. Pastor goes down on three pitches. Grandieri flies out to center for out number two. Hard hit ball goes off the third baseman as Gordon reaches on the error. Gordon gets fooled on pick-off move by Blanton and gets tagged in a rundown for the final out.

Bottom First: Gordon fields the ball cleanly and takes it to first himself. Ferguson lines a 1-2 pitch into the wall in right center for a double. Wild pitch by Cusick allows Ferguson to advance. Rollins 1-0 Brunetti gounds to Williams at short as the run scores, one out. First pitch swinging, Mager hits a single up the middle. Grounder to Gable ends the frame.

Top Second: Williams nails Blanton right in the thigh, but the pitcher recovers to get the ball and throw him out at first. Lazy fly ball out to center by Mariano. Davis hits a grounder to first for the final out.

Bottom Second: Cusick gets Manning looking for the first out. Single to center for Chase. Pitch-out works as Davis fires down to Gable at second to tag Chase stealing. Bloop single in left center. Cusick has given up four hits, but only one has been hit hard. Tellem fields the ball cleanly at third and fires to Gordon for the third out.

Top Third: Fly out to the second baseman by Maas. Tellem goes down swinging on a 2-2 pitch. Diving stab by Luker at third as he gets up and fires to first for the final out of the inning.

Bottom Third: Strikeout looking on a full count for Cusick. Grounder to short taken care of by Williams for the second out. Chopping grounder to second which Gable fields and fires to first for the 1-2-3 inning.

Top Fourth: Pastor caught looking on the full count for the first out. infield pop by Grandieri, as the Quakers search for their first hit with two down. Gordon trots down to first with the four-pitch walk. Double past the third baseman by Williams as Gordon moves over to third. Penn 2-1 Mariano comes through for the second time in as many days, firing a two-run single through the left side. Davis hits one through the right side for a single as the two out rally continues with Maas now up. Maas hits a single to right, but Davis's gets greedy rouding second and is thrown out by the right fielder for the final out. A key mistake for Penn as it would have loaded the bases for Tellem, hopefully it won't come back to haunt the Quakers.

Bottom Fourth: Mager slices a pitch to right for a leadoff single. Cusick gets Luker to swing and miss on a high fastball for the first out. Ball sails over Manning's head as the ball slipped out of Cusick's hand, Mager to second. Cusick hits Manning in the hip. Top Sixth: Grandieri fooled on the 1-2 pitch, swings weakly and misses for the first out. Gordon flies out to right for the second out. Williams walks on a full count. Mariano lines out to the shortstop to end the inning.

Bottom Sixth: Four-pitch walk for Brunetti to open the frame. Sinking line drive caught by Gable and he fires over to first to double up Brunetti. Luker caught looking as Cusick continues to pitch well in his second start of the year.

Top Seventh: Pop up by Davis to the third baseman for the first out. Second baseman loses the ball in the sun, but Manning comes in front right to make the catch. Tellem earns the walk on a seven pitch at-bat. Blanton now over the century mark with 104 pitches. Grounder by Gable ends the inning.

Bottom Seventh: Cusick returns out for the seventh inning having thrown 86 pitches thus far. Pastor covers some ground and takes a good angle to the ball as the makes the catch going into left center. Tied 2-2 Chase lifts a pitch over the right field wall to tie the game up. Cusick walks Hewett on his 100th pitch of the day. The bullpen has two pitchers warming up as Cusick needs to get this next batter out or his day could be over. Penn successfully called the pitch-out, but Daivs couldn't get the ball out of his glove for fire to second. Single to right but the Hewett has to hold on third as Grandieri got the ball in quickly. Cole out to the mound as Cusick's day comes to an end. The junior scattered eight hits over 6.1 innings and is responsible for the two runners on. Reid Terry in to pitch now for Penn. Rollins 3-2 Yount executes the sacrifice bunt to score Hewett, as Terry collects the ball and tosses to first for the second out. Terry sends Ferguson down on three pitches to end the inning.

Top Eighth: Robbie Pagano in to pitch for Rollins now as Pastor steps to the plate. Manning makes a diving catch of Pastor's liner to right. Grandieri singles through the ride side to extend his hitting streak to seven games. On the hit and run Gordon delivers. Grandieri moves to third, and on the throw to get Grandieri Gordon takes second. Williams grounds to third as the runners are forced to hold. Mariano up to bat as Pagano goes out and Marc Hewett, brother of catcher Ben Hewett, comes to the mound. Diving catch by Ferguson robs Mariano as the Quakers are unable to draw even.

Bottom Eighth: Terry back on the mound. Williams goes to his left and into the hole to grab the grounder and fire over to first. Fly out center for the second out. Terry gets the strikeout to end the inning, as he finishes with 1.2 innings of scoreless baseball.

Top Ninth: Last chance for the Quakers to get back in this game as Davis leads off. Davis unable to check his swing as he goes down swinging for the first out. Maas goes down swinging, as Branigan comes in to pinch hit for Tellem. With a full count, Branigan checks his swing and earns the walk. Adrian Lorenzo in to pinch run. Mraz in to pinch hit for Gable. hit and run, and Mraz is just barely thrown out at first.
