PHILADELPHIA - Back-to-back Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year, Sydney Stipanovich, was named to the College Sports Madness Preseason Mid-Major All-America team.
A unanimous first-team All-Ivy selection last year, Stipanovich holds the Ivy League record for blocks in a game, the Penn record for blocks in a season, and is set to break the program's career mark this upcoming season. Last season, she was 16th in the nation in blocks, led the team in scoring with 11.4 points per game, and was eighth in the Ivies in rebounding.
Including Stipanovich, the Red and Blue have nine returning letterwinners and three returning starters from a team that claimed the program's first-ever Big 5 title last year, and reached the postseason for the third straight season (school record). The Quakers were 21-9 last year, including 11-3 in Ivy play, and reached the second round of the WNIT.
Penn hosts Duke in the season opener on Nov. 13. It will be the second game of doubleheader with the men, who tip off with Robert Morris at 5:30 p.m. The Penn-Duke women will tip at 8 p.m. Both games can be seen on the Ivy League Digital Network.
