Student-Athletes from the University of Pennsylvania volunteered their services during the Greater Philadelphia City Year Serve-A-Thon on Saturday, October 26, 2002.
The student-athletes helped renovate the Shepard Recreation Center in West Philadelphia, which serves thousands of children each year. Service projects included refurbishing the community's largest and most widely used athletic field, painting anti-graffiti murals and landscaping open green areas to prevent further pollution.

Tom vonReichbauer, Penn's Student Athlete Advisory Committee President and a member of the Track & Field team commented, "It was great to see athletes come out and give back to the community and at the same time get to meet a handful of fellow Penn athletes. Both as a charitable event and a bonding experience, the results were great. I think Saturday was a great first step in beginning to work more closely with the West Philadelphia community, something I hope Penn athletes will continue to do in the future."
