Successful Day For Women's Rowing at Navy Day

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania women’s rowing program had a successful opening day to the 2012-13 season, taking three titles out of five classes at the Navy Day Regatta which took place Saturday on the Schuylkill River.

Penn took first in the varsity 4 field, then swept the novice 8 and novice 4 fields. The Quakers were second in the College 8 and third in the second varsity 8 field.

Penn put three boats in the fours, and the A boat took first in the 16-boat field in a time of 16:15.90. The B boat was second in 16:24.97, while the C boat was 12th overall in 17:58.11.

In the novice 8, Penn’s time of 15:28.58 was well ahead of second-place Drexel (15:40.85) as well as the other five boats in the field. A total of eight boats were in the novice 4, and Penn’s time of 17:03.92 dominated the field; second-place Temple was more than a minute behind, at 18:13.28.

In the varsity 8, Penn’s A boat clocked 14:59.97 over the three-mile course, a time that was bested only by Navy (14:50.38). The Quakers’ B boat was second in the 17-boat field, clocking 15:48.49, while the C boat was 14th in 16:27.90.

In the second varsity field, which featured 13 boats, Penn’s time of 15:18.07 was beaten by Navy (winner in 14:53.19) and Drexel.

Penn returns to action next Sunday at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston.
