Swim Teams Again Honored For Academics by CSCAA

PHILADELPHIA - The College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) has announced the teams and individuals who have received academic honors for the 2015-16 spring semester. Once again, the University of Pennsylvania was well-represented as both the men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams received CSCAA Scholar All-America Team recognition. In addition, two individuals received recognition as CSCAA Scholar All-Americans while eight others garnered honorable mention status.

A total of 853 student-athlete received CSCAA Scholar All-America recognition across all three NCAA divisions, while 894 received honorable mention selection. The athletes were drawn from 247 colleges and universities. 

At the team level, Penn earned CSCAA All-America Team status as the men's team had a cumulative GPA of 3.42 and the women had a cumulative GPA of 3.44. On the men's side, only five schools -- Alabama, Brown, Harvard, Southern Illinois and Yale -- had a better GPA than Penn.

The men’s team also was represented by eight athletes, seven of whom will return next year for head coach Mike Schnur. Freshman Mark Andrew and junior Kevin Su received Scholar All-America recognition, while Hunter BrakovecBrendan CrystalCole HurwitzWes ThomasTaylor Uselis, and Michael Wen were honorable mention honorees. On the women’s side, junior Ellie Grimes and freshman Libby Jardeleza received honorable mention recognition.

For individual swimmers and divers to be selected to the CSCAA Scholar All-America Team, they must have achieved a grade-point average of 3.50 or higher and have participated in their respective NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. Honorable Mention selections have similarly achieved a GPA of 3.50 and achieved a “B” time standard or, for diving, competed at their respective qualifying meets. 

For teams to be selected as a CSCAA Scholar All-America Team, they must have achieved a grade point average of 3.00 or higher over the spring semester.
