Swimming Sends 14 to Olympic Trials

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania will be represented by 14 swimmers at the 2016 United States Olympic Team Trials next week, led by 2012 graduate Brendan McHugh who is seeded No. 6 in the 100m breaststroke.

McHugh, a U.S. National Team member and volunteer assistant coach with the Quakers, won the 2014 U.S. Championship in the 50m breaststroke and would finish 18th at Worlds. This will be his second Olympic Trials after finishing 10th in the 100 and 16th in the 200 in 2012. In addition to the 100m breaststroke on June 26, he will swim in the 200m breaststroke on June 29.

Joining McHugh in Omaha will be 2016 NCAA champion in the 1650y free, Chris Swanson ’16. Penn’s first national champion in men’s swimming, Swanson was a four-time NCAA All-American for the Red and Blue and he graduated with nine Ivy League championships. Swanson will swim in the 1500m free on July 2, joined by Tyler Uselis.

Another Ivy champion, Eric Schultz ’16, will compete in the 50m free on July 1. The 2016 Ivy champ in the 100y and 200y free, Schultz owns the school records in the 50y, 100y, and 200y free and is part of five relay school records.

Rising sophomore Mark Andrew will swim in the 200m and 400m individual medleys after a rookie season where he won the Ivy title in the 400y IM with an Ivy-record setting performance. He qualified for NCAAs in four different events and already owns the school record in both the 200 and 400 IM. Also swimming in the 200m IM will be Grant Proctor – who has also qualified to compete in the 400m IM and the 200m backstroke – and Thomas Dillinger.

In addition to the 200m IM, Dillinger will swim in the 50 free alongside Schultz. Alex Peterson will give the Quakers a third swimmer entered in the 400m IM on June 26.

McHugh will not be the only Quaker competing in the breaststroke, leading a contingent of five Penn swimmers. Cole Hurwitz and Wes Thomas will also swim the double, competing in both the 100 and 200. Kyle Yu has qualified for the 100m breaststroke, while CJ Schaffer has earned a spot in the 200m field.

The women have two entries in the Trials, led by rising senior Rochelle Dong. The school record holder in the 50y freestyle, Dong will swing in the 50m free on July 2. On June 29, Nancy Hu gets the Penn women started with the 200m fly – Hu is currently the school record holder in the 200y fly.
