Swimming Claims Victories Over Lehigh, Rider

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Penn men's and women's swimming teams each claimed two victories Saturday in their season opening meet at Lehigh as the men defeated Lehigh 182-111 and Rider 166-133 and the women took down Lehigh 227-66 and Rider 195-104.

After both the men's and women's 200-medley relay teams won the season's inaugural event, freshman Naomi Delphin earned the first individual victory of the year for Penn with a time of 10:24.29 in the 1000-free. Sophomore Andrea Balint was the next Quaker to claim victory, winning the 200-free with a time of 1:55.85. Sophomore Sara Coenen followed with a victory in the 100-back (58.91), and freshman Kelby Zimmerman took her first collegiate victory in the 100-breast, 1:07.34.

Delphin finished second in the 200-fly (2:11.17), the first event of the day in which the Quakers could not claim victory. Sophomore Amy Reams turned that around in the 50-free, though, winning with a time of 25.06. Balint earned her second victory of the day in the 100-free (53.35) and Coenen followed suit in the 200-back (2:07.86).

The Quakers rounded out a dominating performance with victories from Zimmerman in the 200-breast (2:23.30) and freshman Genevieve Fleming in the 500-free (5:15.21).

On the men's side, six swimmers claimed individual victories. The first to take an event was freshman Alex Kalish who won the 1000-free with a time of 9:52.19. Senior Pat Gallagher was next, taking the 200-free in 1:42.30. Junior Chaz Maul followed that with a 1:00.20 showing in the 100-breast, good for the victory.

Sophomore James Fee claimed victory in the 500-free (4:47.49) and senior Devon Carr took the 100-fly (52.12). Finally, freshman Kyle Yeager won the 400-IM with a time of 4:12.97.

The Quakers were bolstered by second-place performances by sophomore Larkin MacDonald (54.41 in the 100-back), freshman Andrew Creamer (1:02.06 in hte 100-breast), junior Wei-Ming Gan (1:56.71 in the 200-fly) and sophomore Brad Farris (1:58.13 in the 200-back).

Penn's teams are back in action next weekend. The men take on Cornell and Princeton next Friday at 7 p.m. at Sheerr Pool, while the women will also face Cornell and Princeton at home, Saturday at noon.
