PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams opened their season with second place finishes on Saturday. The Quakers hosted Lehigh and Rider at Sheerr Pool.
Freshman John Gillette took first place in the 50-yard freestyle (21.56). Senior Kevin Scott finished third (22.03). Captain Pat Maloney won the 200-yard butterfly (1:55.39). Teammate Alex Keeney came in third (1:58.05) and Alex Silvester fifth (2:00.42).
Patrick Gallagher finished first in the 100-yard freestyle (47.50) and Devon Carr (4:43.19) and Jason McGrath (4:48.70) placed first and second, respectively in the 500-yard freestyle. Yuchi Zhang took the 200-yard breastroke (2:07.73).
In diving, Tyler Markman placed second (229.95) in the 1-meter.
The women had an impressive debut by winning five events. Margot Newcomer (10:21.17), Theresa Altieri (10:22.22) and Lindsey Gottschalk took the top three spots in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Lessica Aiello (1:56.81) and Cameron Villarreal (1:57.22) placed a top the 200-yard freestyle.
Stephanie Colson (25.13) and Laura Hotaling (25.16) also took first and second finishes in the 50-yard freestyle. In the 200-yard butterfly the Quakers had four of the top five finishes. Alison Bretherick (2:10.06) finished first. Tara Gillies (2:10.89) and Lauren Bergstrom (2:11.74) came in second and third, while Erica Gentilucci (2:12.62) placed fifth.
Although the women did not win the 200-yard butterfly, Laura D’Erasmo (2:10.41), Altieri (2:11.10) Sara Aiello (2:11.60) and Sarah Jeffers (2:12.34) finished in second through fifth place.
Freshman Lauren Bergstrom (54.43) picked up the victory in the 100-yard freestyle. Hayley Wolfgruber (2:11.02), Sarah Bargmann (2:11.19), Andrea DeLeon (2:11.60) and Alison Bretherick (2:14.73) took second through fifth place in the 200-yard backstroke.
In the 1-meter diving Kenyon Lewis (212.35) and Janis Scanlon (199.60) came in first and second.
