PHILADELPHIA - Basketball season is officially underway at the University of Pennsylvania. The 2010-11 men's and women's basketball teams began the first of their preseason practices on Friday.
The men - led by John R. Rockwell Head Coach of Men's Basketball, Jerome Allen, W'10 - will play their first game on Saturday, Nov. 13 against Davidson at The Palestra. The Quakers return 10 letterwinners from a season ago, including three former All-Ivy honorees (Zack Rosen, Tyler Bernardini and Jack Eggleston). Earlier this week, the Quakers named Rosen, Eggleston and Conor Turley as the 2010-11 tri-captains.
The women - under second-year head coach Mike McLaughlin, the fastest coach to 400 wins in NCAA women's basketball history - will tip off Friday, Nov. 12 when the Quakers host Bryant at 7 p.m. in The Palestra. The Quakers return six letterwinners and two starters from the 2009-10 squad and have six incoming freshman under McLaughlin's first recruiting class. Penn lost leading scorer and honorable mention All-Ivy honoree Sarah Bucar to graduation, but return seniors Caroline Nicholson, Jerin Smith and Erin Power.
The Penn Sports Network sat down with the three captains of the men's team earlier this week to discuss the upcoming season as well as with Coach McLaughlin earlier this month to catch up with the women's team.
